Hillcrest provides Christian Education based on Bible stories and real-life living for children and youth.
Sunday School for children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade begins at 9:30 a.m. on our “upper campus” in Room 14.
We start the morning with a healthy snack and a time to center ourselves and practice meditation and Bible verse recitation with peaceful music. We then split into (age appropriate) groups for Bible story and lesson, and discussion. Often arts and crafts, music, dramatization, and/or monitored play time supplement the lessons. Multiple classrooms have a large screen television and internet access to provide relevant resource material for any lesson.
Often the children and youth share a personal experience, a school situation, or a big question for the group. This provides a forum for helping our kids with the situations they face in school and in life every day.
Participating in Church Worship Service
Generally, children join the 10:30 worship service with the entire congregation. Children remain in the church sanctuary through the Children’s Moment in the service and then return to the classroom to continue their lesson and activities. They join their families in Fellowship Hall after the service ends at 11:30.
On Communion Sundays, we do the reverse. Kids remain on the upper campus for lessons and other activities, and then join the worship service toward the end, where they receive holy communion (or a special blessing, if that’s what the family prefers) with the rest of the congregation.
Our children and youth often participate in worship as greeters, ushers, readers, musicians, actors in short dramatizations, and assistants with sound and video.
